Uma placa tectónica é uma porção de litosfera limitada por zonas de convergências, zonas de subducção e zonas conservativas. Atualmente, existem sete placas tectónicas principais e muitas mais sub-placas de menores dimensões. É nas zonas de fronteira entre placas que se regista a grande maioria dos terremotos e erupções vulcânicas.
As placas se movimentam porque, a Litosfera, mais leve e fria, praticamente “flutua” sobre o material mais quente e denso, e parcialmente fundido, existente no topo da Astenosfera, ou seja, elas se deslocam sobre essa astesnofera. Nas regiões onde elas se chocam, ali se originam as cadeias de montanhas e até mesmo vulcões, e é nesses pontos, que correm grandes terremotos. Os terremotos e vulcões ocorrem normalmente próximo aos limites das placas, mas também pode ocorrer no centro das placas.
